Insulated Garage Doors in Cape Town

Foam-cored sectional garage doors with thermal breaks and full perimeter seals, for attached garages, converted rooms and bedrooms above the garage.

  • 40mm bonded polyurethane core
  • Thermal break at every section joint
  • Full perimeter seals, all four edges

An insulated garage door has a foam core between two skins rather than a single sheet of steel or aluminium. In Cape Town people buy one for temperature, for noise in the wind, and for a third reason that is particular to a damp coastal winter: condensation.

Insulated garage doors we supply in Cape Town

  • Insulated steel sectional doors, the standard and strongest option.
  • Insulated aluminium-faced doors where the position is coastal or the finish matters on the elevation.
  • Insulated roller shutter doors for low-headroom garages that still need the performance.
  • Full perimeter seals, without which the insulation in the panel does very little.

Condensation in a damp winter

A cold single-skin panel in a wet Cape winter runs with water on the inside, and everything stored against it suffers. Combine that with salt already in the air and the corrosion inside the garage is faster than the corrosion outside it. An insulated panel keeps the inner face closer to the garage temperature and the condensation largely stops.

Noise in the wind

A single-skin door on an exposed elevation resonates in a strong south easter, and on a bad night it is loud enough to be a household complaint. A foam-cored panel is far more rigid and the drumming largely disappears.

Seals matter as much as the core

An insulated panel with a fifteen-millimetre gap under it is a compromised door. Bottom, side and head seals are part of the specification rather than an accessory, and against horizontal winter rain they are doing real work.

Garages that have become rooms

Converted garages are common across the city, from the older Southern Suburbs to the newer Northern Suburbs developments. Where the space is a workshop, an office, a studio or a flatlet, the door is the largest uninsulated surface in the room. An insulated panel with proper seals changes that space more than anything else the same money would buy.

Insulated curtains for cold storage and food processing

The fishing and food sector around the port, Paarden Eiland and Epping runs cold store openings that need insulated curtains, full perimeter sealing and fast operation so the temperature does not leave while the door is open. On a wash-down site the hardware grade matters as much as the insulation, and we quote both.

Weight, balance and the operator

Insulated doors are heavier. The balance components are rated to the finished door and the operator is sized on the real mass. Fitting an insulated door onto hardware set up for a single-skin door is the most common reason one fails early.

What an insulated garage door costs in Cape Town

More than a single-skin door, and worth it where the garage is used for something or where condensation and wind noise are a problem. Priced on opening size, facing material, coating, finish and automation.

Common questions

About insulated garage doors

If the garage is attached to the house, has been converted into a room, or has a bedroom above it — yes, clearly. If it is a detached garage storing a car and a lawnmower, the money is better spent on a heavier gauge or better locking.

Our standard sectional door uses a 40mm section with a rigid polyurethane core bonded to both skins. Because the foam bonds rather than sits loose, the section is stiffer than a single sheet of the same weight and does not drum.

Noticeably, in both directions: the boom of the door itself and traffic noise off the street. It is often the real reason people upgrade when there is a bedroom over the garage.

Low-headroom track kits recover part of the requirement. Beyond that a sectional door will not fit, and we get part of the benefit with an insulated roll-up curtain and heavier perimeter sealing instead. Measure lintel to ceiling and send us the number.
