- Insulated aluminium or galvanised slat
- Openings to 5 000mm wide
- Remote and battery backup available
A roll-up garage door coils into a barrel above the opening instead of running back along the ceiling. In Cape Town it suits two situations particularly well: the older housing with almost no headroom, and coastal properties where keeping the drive inside the barrel and out of the salt air is a real advantage.
Roll-up garage doors we supply in Cape Town
- Galvanised steel roll-up doors with the coating specified for the position.
- Aluminium roll-up doors, which on the most exposed coastal openings are frequently the better long-term buy.
- Marine-grade powder-coated finishes matched to the house or the complex specification.
- Single and double widths, built to the measured opening.
Roll-up doors for low-headroom garages
The barrel needs a few hundred millimetres above the opening and nothing behind it. That makes a roll-up door the practical answer in the older garages through Woodstock, Observatory, Salt River, Wynberg and the City Bowl, and it leaves the ceiling free.
Aluminium on a seafront property
On a garage a few hundred metres from surf, an aluminium roll-up curtain with stainless hardware will outlast a coated steel one by a wide margin. It costs more at purchase and less over ten years, and on those positions we will say so plainly rather than quoting the cheaper door and letting the owner discover the difference.
Manual or motorised
Most roll-up doors are motorised with a tube motor inside the barrel, which on this coast has the useful benefit of keeping the drive enclosed. Every one we fit has a manual override, and we quote battery backup as standard.
Doors for openings that are not square
On the older housing stock reveals have moved. A curtain running in guides will track where a rigid panelled door would bind, which is one honest reason we fit so many roll-up doors here. We measure the reveal at top, middle and bottom before deciding.
Security on a roll-up garage door
Guide depth, end locks and the bottom rail do the work. A motorised door with a locking drive position cannot be pushed up from outside. On the coast we specify the locking hardware in a grade that will still work in ten years.
Bottom rails, seals and driven rain
Winter rain here is horizontal, and the bottom rail and seal are what keep the garage dry. We specify a heavier rail and a proper seal on exposed openings, and set the threshold so water runs away from the guide feet.

Common questions
About roll-up garage doors
Very little — the curtain coils into a barrel just above the opening rather than running back along the ceiling. Around 300mm to 400mm above the lintel is usually enough. This is why roll-up doors are the answer in garages with beams, storage racking or a flat roof.
Older ones are. A modern galvanised curtain with nylon guide inserts and a soft start-and-stop motor is much quieter than the rattling doors people remember. Most of the noise complaints we are called out for turn out to be dry guides or a worn barrel bearing.
Not to the standard of an insulated sectional door, because the slats have to curl. We improve it with foam-filled slats and heavier perimeter sealing, which helps with dust and noise more than heat. If the garage is attached to living space, a sectional door is the better answer.
Curtains jumping out of the guides, worn barrel bearings, broken springs inside the barrel, and rust along the bottom rail where the door stands in driveway water. All four are repairable, usually in a single visit.
