Where headroom allows a panel stack

Sectional Garage Doors in Cape Town

Sectional doors lift in hinged panels that stack flat against the ceiling. They seal better than any other garage door and run quietly enough not to wake the house.

  • 40mm insulated panels
  • Full perimeter weather seals
  • Glazed panel options

A sectional garage door lifts in hinged panels and runs back along the ceiling, and it is the standard door on the newer Cape Town housing through Durbanville, Brackenfell, Century City, Parklands, Sunningdale and the Southern Suburbs. It gives the best seal of any garage door type, which on this coast is not a small point.

Sectional garage doors we supply in Cape Town

  • Steel sectional doors in ribbed, panelled and flush profiles, coated for the position.
  • Insulated sectional doors with a foam core for garages used as living or work space.
  • Aluminium and glazed sections where the door is part of the elevation or the position is exposed.
  • Timber and timber-look finishes for the larger Constantia and Atlantic seaboard elevations.

Sealing against wind-driven rain

This is the strongest argument for a sectional door here. The panel face sits against the frame all the way round, so bottom, side and head seals actually work against rain that arrives horizontally. On an exposed elevation in winter that perimeter seal is the difference between a dry garage and a wet one.

Coating and corrosion on the coast

A steel sectional door within a few hundred metres of surf needs a marine-grade finish over heavy galvanising, and stainless or coated track hardware, hinges and fixings. The panels are rarely what fails first; it is the hinges, rollers and track brackets. We specify those to the position rather than fitting the standard kit everywhere.

Headroom, side room and square openings

A standard sectional door needs around three hundred millimetres above the opening, clear space each side, and a reasonably true reveal. On the older housing stock the reveal is frequently out by enough to make a rigid door bind, and we measure top, middle and bottom and recommend a shutter where that is the honest answer.

Insulated sectional doors

An insulated door makes a real difference where the garage is a workshop, a gym, an office or a flatlet, and it is noticeably quieter in wind. On an exposed elevation the extra rigidity stops the drumming a single skin does in a south easter.

Springs, balance and cables

A sectional door is balanced by torsion assemblies, and on the coast the cables are the component to watch. We fit galvanised or stainless cables on coastal properties, rate the tension components to the door mass, and check both by hand at every service.

Motorising a sectional garage door

Rail-mounted operators sized to door mass, with a manual release and battery backup, and control gear in a sealed enclosure mounted where it stays dry. Safety reversal is set and tested at handover.

What a sectional garage door costs in Cape Town

Priced on width and height, panel type, insulation, coating system, hardware grade, finish and automation. Single and double doors are quoted separately because the balance and operator specification changes with the mass.

Common questions

About sectional garage doors

Around 300mm to 450mm of clear space above the lintel for a standard track, though low-headroom kits recover part of that. Measure to the ceiling or the nearest beam, whichever is lower, and send us the figure before you order anything.

The panels are hinged and run on rollers in a track rather than curling around a barrel, and the section joints seal against each other. On an insulated door the foam core also damps the drumming that makes a single-skin door boom.

Yes. Glazed panels can go into any section, most often the second row down so daylight comes in at eye level. Toughened, frosted and tinted glass are all available, and an aluminium-framed full-view door is a step further again.

They have more moving parts than a tip-up door — rollers, hinges, cables and springs — so an annual service matters more. In exchange the wear is spread across many small parts that are cheap to replace individually.
