Steel is the most common garage door material in Cape Town, and away from the immediate coast it is the right one: strongest for the money, repairable, and available in any finish. Close to the sea the question becomes how it is protected, and that is where most of the doors we replace here went wrong.

Galvanised, coated, and duplex systems
Every steel door we supply is galvanised before it is coated. Inland and through the Northern Suburbs that is a complete answer. Nearer the sea we specify a duplex system, heavier galvanising with a marine-grade topcoat over it, which lasts substantially longer than either layer alone. We will tell you which your property needs rather than quoting the same door everywhere.
Where steel is the wrong choice
On a garage a short walk from surf, a steel door is a maintenance commitment no matter how well it is coated, and aluminium is usually the better buy over ten years. We say that plainly even though the steel door is the easier sale, because the alternative is a customer who replaces a door in five years and blames the manufacturer.
Hardware, tracks and fixings
On coastal steel doors the panels are rarely what fails first. Hinges, rollers, track brackets, cables and fixings go long before the face does. Those get specified in stainless or a heavy coating, and it is the single most useful upgrade on a steel door here.
Gauge, span and wind
A wide double in a light gauge flexes, tracks badly and drums in a south easter. We specify the gauge and the reinforcing for the span and the exposure rather than defaulting to the same panel for every opening.
Insulated steel garage doors
An insulated steel door is stiffer, quieter and far better where the garage is a workshop, a gym or a room. In winter it also reduces the condensation that forms on the inside of a cold single skin in a damp coastal climate.
Security on a steel garage door
Panel strength is only part of it. The locking, the track fixings and, on a motorised door, a drive that holds the door down are what stop a door being lifted. We fit anti-lift arrangements as standard on automated doors.

Between 0.5mm and 0.8mm galvanised sheet. The gauge is the specification that matters most — thin sheet dents when something falls against it. We quote the gauge on every proposal so you can compare offers on the same basis.
Chromadek is a factory-applied coil coating: tough, consistent and hard to beat for durability. Powder coating lets us match any RAL colour to the trim on your house. Both go over galvanising, never over bare steel.
Only if the coating is breached and left. It starts at the bottom rail, where the door stands in driveway water, and around fixings. We use galvanised bottom rails, seal cut edges and fit a proper bottom seal. Inland a maintained steel door runs well over a decade.
We do not work that way. Older South African garages are rarely square, and forcing a stock-size door into an out-of-square opening is what leaves the daylight gap down one side. Every door is built to the measured opening.
