Built for wind load and coastal air

Roller Shutter Door Manufacturing in Cape Town

Cape Town doors are built with wind locks, heavier end retention and coastal-grade finishes as the starting point rather than an upgrade.

We manufacture the roller shutter doors we install, and in Cape Town that control over specification matters more than anywhere else we work. A door built to an inland specification and shipped to a coastal site will look acceptable on the day and be failing within two years. Everything we build for this market is specified against its actual exposure.

Curtain, guides, barrel, bottom rail, fixings and drive are specified together, from the opening size, the duty and the corrosion zone the building sits in.

  • Curtain gauge and profile chosen for span, wind load and cycle count.
  • Guide depth and wind locks so the curtain stays in its channel in a south easter.
  • Barrel and shaft sized on deflection across the actual span.
  • Coating and hardware specified against distance from the sea.

Corrosion zones and how we specify for them

We treat Cape Town as three zones rather than one town. Within roughly five hundred metres of surf, at Sea Point, Bakoven, Kalk Bay, Muizenberg, Big Bay or Melkbosstrand, we specify a duplex system: heavy hot-dip galvanising with a marine-grade powder coat over it, and stainless fixings and hardware throughout. Between there and about five kilometres inland we use heavier galvanising with a good topcoat and coated hardware. Well inland, through the Northern Suburbs and the flats, standard galvanising with a normal coating is sound. Quoting the wrong zone is the single most common reason doors fail early here.

Aluminium and stainless where steel will not last

On the most exposed positions there is a point where no coating on steel is the right answer, and aluminium curtains with stainless hardware are. We will recommend that where it is genuinely justified and say plainly where it is not, because it is a considerable price difference.

Wind loading and the South Easter

Wind is a design input here, not a footnote. A wide curtain on an exposed elevation in Blouberg or on the Atlantic seaboard sees pressures that decide the slat gauge, the guide depth and whether wind locks are needed. We ask which way the opening faces and what shelters it before specifying.

Doors for Epping, Montague Gardens and Paarden Eiland

The main industrial belts carry manufacturing, distribution and cold storage. Paarden Eiland and the port side sit in a severe corrosion zone as well as a working one, which means the door has to survive both forklifts and salt. Those get heavy curtains, deep guides, duplex coatings and stainless hardware.

Measuring and manufacturing lead times

We measure on site. Standard doors run two to three weeks from approved measurements; duplex-coated, marine-specification and fire-rated units run longer because the coating process is a separate stage, and we say so before you commit.

Common questions

About roller shutter door manufacturing

Roughly eight metres wide, depending on the slat gauge and the drive selected. Height is generally limited by the building rather than the door. Unusual openings are normal work for us — the door is built to your measured opening, not cut down from a stock size.

Yes. Powder coating is available to any RAL colour, and we regularly match centre management or corporate specifications. Galvanised is the default where the opening faces weather, salt air or washdown, because the zinc is bonded to the steel rather than sprayed over it.

Yes, we manufacture for trade as well as supplying and installing direct. Tell us the opening dimensions, slat specification and drive requirement and we will quote on manufacture only.

Two to three weeks from accepted quote for a standard industrial or domestic door, with survey and manufacture taking most of that. Fire-rated assemblies and unusual sizes take longer because components are brought in.
