- Punched galvanised slat, mixed options
- Openings to 6 000mm wide
A perforated roller shutter door closes an opening while still letting light and sight through it. In Cape Town it does something else that matters here: it lets wind pass through instead of catching it, which on an exposed elevation is a genuine structural advantage rather than a nicety.
How a perforated roller shutter door is built
- Punched or grille-pattern slats in steel or aluminium, in a range of open areas.
- Standard guides and locking, so the security specification is unchanged from a solid door.
- Mixed curtains with a solid lower section and perforated upper where privacy and light both matter.
- Marine-grade finishes where the position calls for them.
Wind pressure and open curtains
A solid curtain on a wide opening facing the south east behaves like a sail. A perforated face lets a meaningful part of that pressure through, which reduces the load on the guides, the fixings and the barrel. It is not a substitute for wind locks and correct gauge, but on an exposed elevation it is a real consideration and one worth raising before the door is specified.
Perforated shutters on coastal homes
Over a patio or stacking door with a view, a perforated curtain is frequently the only shutter a household will accept. It secures the opening, keeps the light, keeps most of the outlook, and takes the worst of the wind-blown salt off the glass behind it.
Perforated shutters for Cape Town retail
Shops at the V and A Waterfront, Canal Walk, Cavendish and along the City Bowl, Sea Point and Kalk Bay trading streets use perforated curtains so the display still sells overnight. Several centres prefer them to solid shutters for exactly that reason.
Ventilation on industrial and plant openings
Compressor housings, generator enclosures, switch rooms and forklift charging bays through Epping and Montague Gardens need to be locked and ventilated at the same time. Charging areas in particular have a genuine ventilation requirement.
Parking and access openings
Basement entrances in apartment buildings use perforated shutters so drivers and security can see through the door, and so the basement does not become a sealed box.
Security of a perforated curtain
The perforation is in the slat face; the strength is in the slat section, the end locks, the guide depth and the bottom rail. A properly specified perforated door secures an opening as well as a solid one. On street frontages we run a solid lower section and perforate above reach.
Cleaning and salt
A perforated curtain has more surface area for salt to settle on, and it needs rinsing more often for that reason. On a coastal property we build that into the service schedule and explain it at handover.
